The Canon 60D gives you the option of locking the Quick Control dial so you don’t inadvertently change your settings while you are shooting. Because of the location of this dial, I’ve accidentally bumped it and changed my exposure during a shoot.
To avoid making such mistakes, I usually lock this setting. Enabling the lock on your camera allows you to quickly and easily make changes to your settings only when you want to.
Please note that this feature only applies when using the Advanced shooting modes. When shooting with the Program (P), Shutter Priority (Tv), and Aperture Priority (Av) modes, you will be locking the dial to prevent changes to the exposure compensation; and when shooting in Manual (M) and Bulb (B) modes, you prevent inadvertent changes to the aperture setting.
ENABLING THE QUICK CONTROL DIAL LOCK-RELEASE BUTTON
- Wake the camera (if necessary) by lightly pressing the Shutter button.
- Press the Menu button on the back of the camera, and then use the Multi- Controller to select the fourth menu tab from the right. Then scroll down to the Lock item at the bottom of the screen (A).
- Press the Set button, and then select Enable (B).
- Press the Set button again to lock in this change.
Now, when you are shooting, the Quick Control dial will not make any changes to your exposure settings until you press the UNLOCK button underneath the dial (Figure 1.10). Pressing this button will temporarily cancel the lock on the Quick Control dial so you can make changes.
