You can’t always count on having great light when you want to take a picture. Shooting indoors is difficult, and shooting indoors under very low light is even worse. The G12 includes a Low Light mode that aims to improve scenes like this by using a wide aperture and a high ISO (Figure 3.8).
The feature comes with a price, however. The G12 may significantly increase the ISO— beyond 3200, even, the highest setting on the ISO dial—which can lead to more image noise than you may find acceptable. You do have some control over ISO, though: Press the Function/Set button, make sure the ISO setting at the top of the menu is selected, and use the Control dial to choose an ISO level from 320 up to 12800. This mode also reduces the photo size to the M setting (1824 by 1368 pixels).
